Shabbat Shalom!

This week’s Torah portion, Vayikra, introduces the different kind of sacrifices offered in the Tabernacle and later the Temples in Jerusalem. There is the Olah-which is completely burnt, the Mincha, the Chatat, the Asham, and there is the Shelamim.  The name Shelamim is related to the word “shalom”, meaning whole, complete.  One of the characteristics of the shelamim sacrifice is that everyone gets a part of it-some is burned on the altar and offered to God, part is given to the priests, and part is saved for the one making the sacrifice.  Perhaps that is why it is called the shelamim-the “wholeness” sacrifice.  When everyone “wins” and gets something-when there is no zero sum game of winners and losers, “wholeness” shalom, can take place.  In our society we tend to emphasize and extol the virtue of “winning”-of coming out ahead of the other person.  Perhaps the lesson of the Torah is that when there is no one “winner”-when all can share in winning, in success, there is a greater chance for peace.

Shabbat Shalom
