This course, led by Dr Andrew Meyer, History Professor at Brooklyn College, will cover aspects of the messianic tradition in Jewish history. We will begin with a general discussion of the idea of the Messiah and its origins in Jewish scripture and religious practice. Subsequent sessions will cover three messianic movements in Jewish history, respectively: 1)The Bar Kokhba Revolt (132 C.E.-136 C.E.); 2)The Sabbatai Zevi (1626 C.E.-1676 C.E.) Affair; 3)The career of Jacob Frank (1726 C.E.-1791 C.E.). Over all sessions, we will discuss the different ways in which Jews have understood the identity and role of the Messiah, the impact that messianic movements have had on the evolution of the Jewish tradition as a whole, and the different ways in which scholars have approached the study of messianism in Jewish history. The course will be streamed via zoom and advance registration is required for each session of the class in order to be sent the zoom link.
