In Hebrew, "Ezra" means "help."
The Ezra Group was started in 1991 to help our congregants, the Jewish community, and the community-at-large.
For our congregants, the Ezra Group offers monthly Monday Afternoon Socials with speakers on topics of Jewish interest: our heritage, ethics, literature, and history. Meetings begin with cake, coffee, and conversation, and sometimes a luncheon. Ezra also sponsors trips for our congregants in conjunction with the Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Deal. Recent trips included visits to the Jewish Museum, the Philadelphia flower show, and a tour of Jewish historical places in New Your City.
For the Jewish community and the community-at-large, Ezra offers personal service, and donations to help those in need. Congregants visit nursing homes to provide residents with a Shabbat service once a month. Congregants have also made brown bag lunches to be taken to help the homeless in New Your City. In addition to direct involvement, congregants give donations to the Ezra Charities Fund. These donations are then distributed to worthy charitable organizations that help the needy. Some of the groups that have benefited include food banks, organizations that help the homeless, the developmentally disabled in Israel, and a synagogue in New Delhi in India. In past years Ezra has helped victims of hurricanes and earthquakes, and has contributed to the rebuilding of a synagogue destroyed by fire.
There is no fee for joining the Ezra Group or for attending monthly meetings. Our time together is a time to renew old friendships and make new ones. Everyone is invited to attend.
If you have any questions just contact the Synagogue office and ask for a representative of Ezra.
