Cantor Marla Barugel is a 1987 graduate of the Cantors Institute Seminary College of Jewish Music (now known as the H. L. Miller Cantorial School) at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City. She was one of the first two women to receive the Diploma of Hazzan from the Seminary.
Cantor Barugel is also a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where she obtained a BA in French and Spanish and an MS in Secondary Education.
Barugel has lived in Paris and Madrid and has entertained audiences in France, Italy, Mexico and Israel. She has brought joy to adults and children in hospitals such as the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the Jewish Home and Hospital. She has also performed for numerous synagogues and organizations.
Barugel made her debut as a soloist at the Cantors Assembly Convention in Milwaukee in June 1994 and has been a member of the New Jersey Cantors Concert Ensemble since 1987. She has participated in KLEZKAMP, the Yiddish Folk Arts Program sponsored by Living Traditions, where she studied and performed Yiddish Art and Folk Song. She is also a specialist in the Judeo-Spanish song repertoire.
Barugel has appeared on both radio and television and has been interviewed by numerous publications on the subject of women cantors. Cantor Barugel is also a recording artist. Her CD entitled "From Darkness to Light" was released in April 2000.
Barugel has served as the Cantor of Congregation B'nai Israel in Rumson, New Jersey since 1987. She is also a founding member of the Cantors Institute Alumni Association and has sat on its Board of Trustees. In addition, she has served on the Executive Council of the Cantors Assembly.
Barugel is the proud mother of two boys: Michael and Avi.
