BAR & BAT MITZVAH

Congregation B’nai Israel is proud of the care and dedication that our children devote to their Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies.  These coming-of-age ceremonies are an important means by which the Congregation asserts and establishes continuing loyalty to the Torah and provides for the passing of that loyalty from one generation to the next. The training that our children receive growing up in our Religious School and attending Junior Congregation provides the necessary initial background for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah training.

During the year leading up to their own ceremony, every child is privately and extensively trained and coached by our Cantor and tutors so that they will be comfortable and fully prepared to recite the blessings and chant their Torah and Haftarah readings. Every  child also works with our Rabbi to prepare and deliver a sermon to bring home the message of their Torah portion to the full Congregation.  Those children who excel in their readings are invited to become regular Torah Readers in our services.  In this way, the skills of our Congregation are constantly refreshed.
